From 1 August 2026, Jersey will be an independent designation under the Madrid System.

This means that designating the UK in an International Registration will no longer automatically extend protection to Jersey for new filings, subsequent designations or renewals. Jersey will need to be selected separately.  Applicants designating Jersey will also need to include a declaration of intention to use the mark in Jersey.

Existing International Registrations designating the UK before 1 August 2026 will automatically have a Jersey designation recorded, provided protection has been granted in the UK. The UK and Jersey designations will then operate independently therefore Jersey will need to be renewed in addition to the UK if protection in Jersey is required – more renewal fees!

Therefore, brand owners will need to factor Jersey into their Madrid filing and renewal strategies from August 2026.
